How to Stain a Chair with BEHR® Fast Drying Water-Based Wood Stain

So you’re ready to give that chair some new life. Let’s do it. We can make this chair brighten up the room using these quick-drying, water-based products.

For Best Results:

Start your interior stain project by cleaning the surface and lightly sanding the wood.

Apply BEHR® Water-Based Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner to prevent streaks and blotches.

Suggested Tools & Supplies
  • Sandpaper (120, 220, 320 and 400 Grit)

  • Sanding Block

  • Cheesecloth

  • Latex Gloves

  • Mini Foam Applicator

  • Multi-Purpose Shop Rags

  • Metal Can Opener

  • Paint Thinner

  • Painter's Tape

  • Plastic Containers

  • Drop Cloths

  • Tack Cloth

  • Natural Bristle Brush

  • Safety Glasses

  • Screwdriver

  • Step 1

    To prep the surface, sand the wood evenly with a sanding block and 220 grit sandpaper. Then, wipe away the dust with a lint-free cloth. 

  • Step 2

    Apply BEHR® Water-Based Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner and let it penetrate the wood for 20 minutes.

  • Step 3

    Apply BEHR® Fast Drying Water-Based Wood Stain, working the stain into the grain. Give the stain 3-5 minutes to penetrate.

  • Step 4

    Use a lint-free cloth to remove any excess stain, and to blend any light and dark areas. Let the stain dry for one hour. For darker colour, repeat the previous steps.

  • Step 5

    Brush on two coats of BEHR® Fast Drying Water-Based Polyurethane. Lightly sand between coats with 220 grit sandpaper.

    TIP: For a smooth finish, hold the brush at a 45-degree angle and brush lightly across the surface.
