Save Space with a Dual-Purpose Shelf

In a single afternoon, with a few tools and a trip to the hardware store, you can build this floating shelf that converts to a serving station. Not only is this shelf designed to entertain but with a little paint you can add a pop of colour to your room that is sure to be a hit.

Applying wood putty to the screw holes

To build this entertaining shelf I started by cutting the wood to the size specified by the project plans. Then I marked the diagonal cut of the 2x8s and cut straight down the line to create the sides (top and bottom). Next, I pre drilled the holes for the screws as to prevent the wood from splitting. Finally, I assembled the top and bottom of the shelf using 1-1/4" and 2-1/2" wood screws

Now that the top and bottom are assembled I laid them flat on the workbench and sand the top of the sides flush with one another. This makes sure that the hinge point is in the right place, making for a flat serving station when in the open position.

Now for the finishing, start by filling all the screw holes, cracks and seams with wood filler. Once the wood filler has had ample time to dry, sand it smooth with a fine grit sand paper.

Here comes the best part. Painting! When I paint furniture or decor, I like to apply at least 2-3 thin coats, making sure to sand with a fine grit sandpaper between each one. This will give you a great even colour when you are done. Make sure to allow ample time for each coat to dry before sanding and remove any dust with a tack cloth before the next application of paint.

Don’t hesitate to try colours that you wouldn’t normally expect to use.

That’s what makes these DIY projects fun and that’s what people will remember
