How to Create a Stippling Finish

Stippling green colored wall

This faux finish technique imparts a subtle yet dimensional look to your walls.

For Best Results:

Mix the entire quantity of glazing colour needed for the project before you start painting. Combining the contents produces uniformity of colour. This intermixing is called "boxing."

  1. Step 1

Paint the base colour and allow it to dry completely before glazing.

  2. Step 2

To prepare your topcoat glaze colour, pour 1 part PREMIUM PLUS ULTRA® or PREMIUM PLUS® paint (0.95L) and 4 parts FAUX GLAZE (3.79L) into a bucket and mix the contents thoroughly. For a more see-through or transparent look, add extra faux glaze to the mixture. For a denser or more opaque glaze colour, add more paint to the mixture. The mixture will generally cover approximately 37 sq. m.

  3. Step 3

Dip a quality 5.1 - 6.4 cm wide nylon-polyester brush into the colour glaze mixture from the bucket. With your brush, paint (cut in) around the perimeter of the working surface. Start at the top corner and continue along the ceiling and around the baseboards.

  4. Step 4

Pour your colour glaze mixture into a paint tray and work a 15 cm mini roller into the glaze until it is fully loaded. To remove excess glaze, roll the tool on the ribbed area of the paint tray.

  5. Step 5

Starting at a top corner of your project area, roll the coloured glaze onto a 61 x 61 cm section.

  6. Step 6

While the glaze is wet, use your brush to dab or tap the coloured glaze off the surface in a random motion. Work on creating a pattern of small dots. Continue until you arrive at a look you like.

  7. Step 7

Continue to work in 61 x 61 cm sections. Overlap and blend each section as you go to avoid hard edges.

  8. Step 8

Repeat the process until the project is complete.
