How to Create a Sponge On Finish

A Sponge On Finish creates a distinctive textured pattern on your wall. Depending on the amount of pressure you apply and the distance between sponge imprints, the look can range from subtle to dramatic.

For Best Results:

BEHR Faux Glaze has an open working time of 15 minutes. Work at a quick and steady pace to avoid the development of hard lines in your project.

If you prefer a subtle Sponge On Pattern, do not squeeze the sponge or push down too hard onto the wall surface.

  1. Step 1

To create the Sponge On Finish, you will need a sea sponge , a bucket of water, a paintbrush and a cloth or rag.

  2. Step 2

Paint the base colour and allow it to dry completely before glazing.

For additional help on your interior painting project, refer to the how-to's listed here.

  3. Step 3

To prepare the BEHR Faux Glaze, you will combine four parts glaze to one part BEHR Paint. For example, in an average sized room, you will use 3.79L of BEHR PREMIUM PLUS WITH STYLE® Faux Glaze and 0.95L of PREMIUM PLUS ULTRA® Paint and Primer in One or PREMIUM PLUS® Paint. Stir the paint and glaze mixture thoroughly.

  4. Step 4

Use a paintbrush to coat a water-dampened sea sponge with the glaze colour. Blot excess paint with a clean cloth or rag.

  5. Step 5

Apply the sponge to the wall surface, creating random patterns as you blot with the sponge. Continue across your wall until the entire surface is covered.
