How to Create a Colour & Wash Finish

You can create elegant and individual finishes using Faux Glazing techniques.

For Best Results:

Mix the entire quantity of glazing colour needed for each glaze before you start painting.  You'll help ensure uniformity of colour.

  1. Step 1

Paint the base colour and allow it to dry completely before glazing.

  2. Step 2

This project uses 2 topcoat glaze colours.
To prepare the first topcoat glaze colour, pour 1 part PREMIUM PLUS ULTRA® or PREMIUM PLUS® paint (0.95L) and 4 parts FAUX GLAZE (3.79L) into a bucket and mix the contents thoroughly. For a more see-through, transparent look, add extra faux glaze to the mixture. For a denser or more opaque glaze colour, add more paint to the mixture. The mixture will generally cover approximately 37 sq. m.

Use this same 1:4 ratio in the preparation of the second topcoat glaze colour.

  3. Step 3

Pour the first colour glaze mixture into a paint tray and work a 15 cm mini roller into the glaze until it is fully loaded. To remove excess glaze, roll the tool on the ribbed area of the paint tray.

  4. Step 4

Starting at the top corner of your project, roll a very thin coat of this first glaze colour onto a small section. You do not have to cover the base colour completely with the coloured glaze.

  5. Step 5

Quickly and in the same section, brush on short, random strokes of the second glaze colour with a 10 cm brush.

  6. Step 6

While the coloured glazes are wet, follow your treatment with a pad applicator. In both small and large overlapping crisscross motions, gently blend the glaze colours together.

  7. Step 7

Continue to work in small sections. Overlap and blend each section as you go to avoid hard edges.

  8. Step 8

Repeat the process until the project is complete.
