Sample paint showing poor sheen uniformity.

Causes

  • Uneven paint application.
  • Failure to properly prime a porous surface, or surface with varying degrees of porosity.
  • Poor application resulting in lapping (see Lapping).
  • Use of low-quality paint.
  • Application under drying conditions that promote fast dry, such as hot and low humidity level conditions.

Solutions

  • New substrates should be primed/sealed before applying the topcoat to ensure a uniform surface.
  • Applying an additional coat will often even out sheen irregularities.
  • Use proper spray technique.
  • When rolling paint on, use a top quality roller cover.
